Winning tip: Waterworld, Bundoran, Ireland

Drift off with the mermaids as you soak in an Irish seaweed bath. First unwind in a private steam cabinet: let your skin warm and the stress evaporate. Then climb into a cast-iron roll-top bath filled with hot sea water and seaweed and play with the algae, feeling your skin turn silky. For the full treatment, stand up, pull a chain and blast yourself with a shower of ice-cold water. Go solo, or indulge in a double treatment room with two baths.

EcoYoga, Ford, Argyll & Bute

This is a beautiful, sustainable retreat centre amid scenery raw enough to let you feel you are getting back to nature. All electricity comes from a hydro turbine and solar panels, and the yoga shala has underfloor heating. Wi-Fi and phone reception is sketchy, which was a joy after a few days. We were able to completely let go of modern life without travelling to a different country or paying a fortune to be pampered. With nutritious food and a peaceful atmosphere, our week at EcoYoga was an absolute tonic.

Permaculture design, various

Last year I gave my brain, body and soul a treat and booked on a permaculture design course, that brought dreamers and doers together to explore new ways of living. Twelve of us worked with fantastic tutors, taking inspiration from natural systems, learning about sustainable ways to produce food, generate energy, house ourselves, create a community, think and live well. It was a transformational tool kit for life that doesn't cost the earth.

Try a Taste of the Bay break at Watergate Bay Hotel, near Newquay. With its infinity pool looking out across the bay, spa rooms and firelit ocean lounge with a hot chocolate, it's a perfect affordable stay. There's good food on site, or you can nip around the corner to Fifteen or The Beach Hut, then take a walk in the bay or on the South West Coast Path. I go with my spa-hating husband, who just likes a swim and to watch the sea.

Zest Life yoga retreats, Anglesey

The Zest Life's Laura Bell runs rejuvenating two- or three-day weekend breaks at the Plas Cadnant estate on Anglesey. The retreats focus on nourishing both body and soul, and include activities such as beach walks, hikes up Snowdon and circuit training, as well as yoga sessions and delicious nutritious, homemade vegetarian meals. You can also walk around the beautiful estate gardens, enjoy a massage, or just sit by the fire in the converted barn accommodation.

Only three hours from London but it could be a million miles away, the hamlet of Geldeston on the river Waveney is my ideal escape to unwind and de-stress. Explore the area by foot or on the river or take a short drive to Southwold or Dunwich. Peaceful days are complemented with lively evenings: a moonlit walk across the fields will take you to the perfect country pub (geldestonlocks.co.uk), with an open fire, home-cooked meals and live music most weekends.

Take tram number 67 from central Vienna to Terme Wien for an invigorating yet inexpensive spa experience. The award-winning complex is an astonishing 75,000m² in total, including numerous indoor and outdoor pools of varying ambience, depth, size, temperature and salinity; a vast sauna area; several restaurants and bars; and space to lounge inside and out. Built in 2010, the spa is immaculate and deservedly well-loved by the Viennese, but even on a busy day there is plenty of space to unwind. A snowy evening in one of the steamy underlit outdoor pools is pretty close to magical.

I stepped off a plane full of clubbers to be met by Amy and Nina and we went straight into the hot yoga studio. This was the start of the most relaxing and inspiring week of my life. It was a transformation on a magical island, with two yogi warriors who have such vitality, knowledge and understanding that they sweep you up and carry you along with their love and laughter. And the food was delicious, the villa a haven and the weather glorious.

Yoga Magic, a mile or so from the coast in northern Goa, ticks all the boxes for a restful and rejuvenating break. This small but beautifully designed resort winds its way through colourful flowerbeds, and looks out over rice paddies. A true eco-lodge, it's solar powered – the shower water is heated by the sun – and guests sleep in lavish tents. You'll be woken in the morning by a tinkling bell as tea or coffee is delivered to your tent. Work up an appetite at the morning and evening yoga classes before tucking into delicious local, organic, vegetarian food. While a way the hours in between lying by the pool, or treat yourself to a vigorous ayurvedic massage.
