Health And Fitness Software Biography

Our top 10 list below summarizes what we consider to be the best Diet and Fitness Software (also known as Diet & Exercise Software), while our buying guide gives you useful advice on what to look for, and what to avoid, when making your choice.

The menu on the right links to our detailed editor's review for each diet and fitness software. Alongside each editor's review you'll also find user reviews (as well as screenshots and videos if they're available) to help you make the right choice.

DietPower:
This personalization is the key to both the reason why Diet Power is our number one choice and why Diet Power is so successful in helping all sorts of different people of different shapes, sizes and ages to eat better and live longer as a result. Because every body is different and different diets work well for different people, the Diet Power software tailors itself to the unique metabolism and dietary needs of each individual user.

The software itself is well designed and incredibly easy to use. The website even offers you a 14 minute demonstration video tour that explains all the buttons to you clearly and in a useful amount of detail. The layout of the screen will be familiar to anyone who's used windows programs before, following the usual tool bar and menu bar configuration (including a useful help function) and doesn't sacrifice depth and detail for usability, or vice versa.

So confident are DietPower.com in their software that they guarantee that you will reach your goal weight and in doing so lower your risks of succumbing to heart disease, stroke, cancer or whatever illness your particular physiology and genotype would otherwise leave you vulnerable to. This is a bold claim and is backed up by a full money-back guarantee, which you can claim up to a year after purchasing the software. So confident are they that you'll be impressed with Diet Power that there's even a free 15-day trial of the full Diet Power software, allowing you to try before you buy.

Fit Day:

Fit Day is a hugely popular software package that lets you take control of your diet. The key point to remember about Fit Day is that there are basically two levels of membership to choose from.

The first offers an online weight and fitness journal, complete with tips, goal setting and tracking tools. This offers more or less everything the casual dieter could want and is completely free

The second level, Fit Day PC, is a significantly more sophisticated downloadable version which you can use offline. This is not free, but the price you pay is almost incidental compared to the wealth of extra and enhanced features you get, many of which will prove invaluable to the serious dieter. It also comes with a 30 day money-back guarantee in case you're not completely satisfied.

The two-tiered approach is clever and distinguishes Fit Day from a lot of other Dieting software available online. This makes sense because not everyone will need the full works. If you think you could just do with losing a pound or two the free version may be perfectly sufficient. On the other hand, there are a lot of serial dieters out there (you know who you are) who have made repeated attempts at losing weight using several different diets and may find that the extra help Fit Day PC provides makes all the difference.

This system also effectively operates as a free-trial option. You can try out the basic version of the Fit Day system online, for free, to see if it works for you, and on the basis of that decide whether you would benefit from purchasing the enhanced version. Fit Day's decision to offer you so much for nothing suggests a reassuring degree of confidence in their product: clearly they believe that, once you try it out, you won't want to settle for just the basic online package.

What both levels of membership allows you to do is take control of your diet and fitness regime by charting every significant variable and clearly showing you your progress so far, how you achieved it and what you need to do to reach your next weight-loss goal. Unlike a lot of diets that require you to blindly follow their magic formula, Fit Day puts you in the driving seat so you can see for yourself what works. Just as importantly, it helps you learn about the social and emotional triggers that lead to bad eating habits and how to defeat them. This makes good psychological sense - you're much more likely to stay on the straight and narrow if you understand and feel in control of your diet than if you feel like it's controlling you. Essentially, Fit Day means no more dieting in the dark.

Weight-By-Date:
Explaining the Weight-by-date approach to dieting can be divided into three main steps: Overcoming your Weight, Balancing your diet and Improving your life. But how does this actually work?

The first step incorporates the psychological and motivational aspects of dieting, such as overcoming the moments of weakness that inevitably come with trying to lose weight, setting sensible goals and then enjoying the motivational boost of seeing them achieved. The emphasis here is on using the information and understanding gained from a program like Weight by Date, combined with your own common sense, to take control of your diet and stay on track to reach your desired weight by your chosen target date.

Step two covers the technical side of how you achieve this through balancing your diet. Central to the the Weight by Date system is keeping a regular, honest and detailed food diary. This allows the software to track your progress, compare your current weight to where you started and project that progress into the future using a series of handy charts that map your route to your goal. The program does the math for you, factoring in nutrients consumed and calories burned to enable you to balance your diet day-by-day. Not only does Weight by Date make your goals seem much more achievable, it puts you in charge of how you achieve them. It does this by allowing you to make a more informed choice about what to eat and how to exercise, making you accountable for your own progress and therefore much more likely to stay the course.

Yourself Fitness:
n the crowded marketplace of the weight loss software package, Yourself! Fitness (exclamation mark optional) offers something a bit different, a bit innovative and, just maybe, a bit genius.

The Windows version we're reviewing here evolved out of an XBox game that subsequently migrated to the PS2 and eventually ended up here, on the PC. It's not surprising, therefore, that it's a lot more graphically based than most other forms of dieting software. Rather than having you click through various screens of graphs and stats, Yourself Fitness takes the idea of a virtual personal trainer very literally. And by "literally", I mean she's a virtual person you can see on the screen. And her name is Maya.

Don't be fooled, though. Yourself Fitness is not just for children and gamers and it's actually less a "game" than it is a powerful exercise and dieting tool (otherwise it wouldn't be in our top ten). Very little in terms of depth and flexibility is sacrificed for the sake of playability - you still get a database of over 4500 recipes and 500 distinct exercises to choose from and you can still set your own fitness goals, see them achieved in graphical form and plan your meals and grocery lists day by day.

A key difference is that Yourself Fitness is much more oriented towards exercise than most dieting software packages, which tend to include exercise logging as an aspect of calorie budgeting but don't go anywhere near as far as Yourself Fitness does. In this program Maya guides you through whole exercise routines customized to suit your stated fitness goals and set to appropriate music, which you can follow at your own pace (warning: the music is mostly electronic and gets a bit samey after a while, so you do need a tolerance for techno). You can even ask Maya to incorporate any special equipment you own into her routines - by which I mean exercise balls, hand weights, exercise steps and suchlike. A minor gripe some people have is that your ability to customize these workouts largely depends around you telling Maya what you would like to do and her sorting out the specifics for you - they would like to have a greater degree of control over exactly how the workouts are constructed. For example, if a particular exercise aggravates an injury of yours it is quite difficult to get her to exclude it from future routines.

Weightmania Pro:
Dieting is hard. Weightmania can't change that, but it does promise to make you almost twice as likely to succeed. It works by helping you organize your diet, get the most out of workouts and stay motivated by setting realistic, regular weight-loss goals and then seeing them achieved. In this way Weightmania aims to keep you on track to achieve your desired weight by your target date and set you on course a lifetime of healthier living.

The most impressive aspect of Weightmania, aside from its huge range of tracking options, is how well balanced it is. It offers as much advice on the exercise side of weight loss as it does on dieting itself. It's also just as hot at helping you to overcome your psychological barriers and stay motivated as it is on actually teaching you what you need to eat and why. This adds up to a comprehensive set of tools for helping you take control of your diet, body and lifestyle.

The main problem with Weightmania (apart from the fact that it sounds like an eating disorder) is that it is slightly on the pricey side. Having said that, for the price you pay you do get all the whistles and bells you could wish for from a dieting software program - and a wealth of fitness and exercise features besides. And unlike some diet software it runs on a Mac as well as a PC.

In fact Weightmania really has all the technical angles covered. It can run on Palm Pilots or smart phones and there are even versions designed for multi-users or network use. It's also flexible enough to be used by schools and personal trainers to track dozens of clients, each with their own profile. A word of caution though - be sure you buy the right version of the software for your needs, as there are several different packages - more than most other diet software systems - and choosing the right one can be slightly more complicated than the front page suggests.

Diet Master:
DietMaster aims to bring you all the benefits of having your own private nutrition counselor living inside your PC. Its promise is that it can teach you how to eat a better diet, be it to lose serious amounts of weight or just in order to live a longer, healthier life.

DietMaster is notable amongst other dieting software systems for offering a wide range of different packages to suit various dieting needs and pockets, from DietMaster Lite to DietMaster Deluxe and DietMaster Pro. This is no one-size-fits-all system. Unlike a lot of packages which were designed from scratch for personal use, the home version of DietMaster is actually the junior member of a family of software packages used by health professionals at different levels. So, for example, there's DietMaster Pro for personal trainers and health club owners or DietMaster Med for Medical practitioners. Even the home-use version of DietMaster comes in several different flavors, so it's well worth taking a minute to outline which is which.

The personal use versions of DietMaster fall under the banner of "DietMaster 2100" and there are three basic packages on offer.

"DietMaster 2100 Download Only" is the cheapest and most basic option. It comes without the additional CD ROM media, but it's also the easiest to get started on. You could buy it right now, download it now whilst you're waiting for the kettle to boil, install it and set up a profile whilst you enjoy the hot beverage of your choice, and then you'll be all set to starting working out how to log the caffeine intake on your profile. it's that quick. Even so, it does include almost everything the casual dieter could wish for.

Performance Diet:
Performance Diet's claim is that they can help you “nourish yourself thin”, which is a clever way of saying that this software package teaches you how to diet healthily by eating better rather than just eating less. And by all accounts it's very good at it.

Performance Diet's core promise is that if you follow its program, you will lose the maximum amount of weight it is possible to safely lose and that it will stay lost for at least 5 years. Better yet, this promise is backed up by a money-back guarantee which is good for 90 days after you purchase and download it. A key word in this promise is "safely". Whilst many "fad" diets may help you lose more weight in the short term, the Performance Diet system acknowledges that there is a scientific limit to how much weight you can lose in body fat, as opposed to muscle, water or organ tissue, which you actually need to keep.

Instead of promising dramatic and continuous weight loss, Performance Diet's schedules incorporate recovery periods to allow your body to acclimatize to its new, lower calorie intake, during which you may not actually lose any weight at all. Averaged out, this system promises that you should be regularly losing between half and a quarter of a pound of fat each week. This may not sound like a huge amount, but the Performance Diet philosophy emphasizes honesty - it may not promise the Earth but what it does promise it delivers.

It does this by setting you realistic meal and exercise schedules that suit your lifestyle and allow you to make the most of your limited free time. If you think you simply don't have the time to eat more healthily you should think again: Performance Diet can show you how to make your lifestyle work for, rather than against, your body.
